There is a Kwik Cricket Games course being held locally at the David Keswick Centre, Dumfries on Friday 9th December, 4:30 to 6.

Kwik Cricket is a simple game for all boys and girls from five years of age upwards. It is currently played in primary schools and clubs around Scotland. It is designed to provide children with an introduction to cricket and can be played either indoors or outdoors.

The course shows how to run a fun Kwik Cricket game and be confident on how to organise a game successfully yourself. It is aimed at those new to the sport or those who need some familiarity with Kwik Cricket. So it is suitable if you are a parent, volunteer, player, or teacher and want to encourage some Kwik Cricket at your club, school or group.

On successful completion of the course, the candidates should feel confident in:

organising and setting-up a Kwik Cricket game

scoring a game of Kwik Cricket

umpiring a game of Kwik Cricket

understanding the rules of Kwik Cricket

It is free to attend and is being run by Tim Hart (West Cricket Development Manager) and Chris Stewart (D&G Community Cricket Coach).

If you want to take part please contact Chris Stewart on 07891370618 or email Chris.Stewart@dumgal.gov.uk.

Dumfries & Galloway in their second match of the season again came second to their area opponents and again by 3 wickets in a close match following a similar pattern.

Batting first the Solway boys posted a total which proved to be competitive despite some good bowling by the Ayrshire opening bowlers. They then made inroads to get within touching distance of victory only to be denied by some positive batting at number five. Eleven-year-old Craig Penrice was the batting hero with 22 runs and Chris McBride was almost the bowling match-winner with his 5 overs of leg-breaks.

2011 West U13 inter-area Championship
D&G U13s lost to Ayrshire by 3 wickets at Nunholm
D&G U13s – 84 all out (C Penrice 22, S Khan 2-12, A Gordon 2-12)
Ayrshire U13s – 88 for 7 (S Khan 24*, C McBride 2-7, G Montgomery 2-9)

The opening match for Dumfries & Galloway under 13s took place on Sunday at Nunholm against Glasgow North. The match was dominated by a couple of batting displays – Chris McBride for the home team and R McCallum for the visitors.

Opening the batting, McBride looked like carrying his bat until he got a good delivery from Ghaffar – who bowled at a good pace and was the best bowler on show. Once Chris was out the innings subsided to 118 all out.

At one stage in the second innings D&G were favourites. At 41 for 5 and even 93 for 7 the Glasgow outfit were struggling but McCallum survived one appeal and a couple of chances to see his side home with 2 wickets to spare.

Dumfries & Galloway lost to Glasgow North by 2 wickets
Dumfries & Galloway U13s 118 all out (C McBride 61, A Ghaffar 6 overs 3 for 15, A Ewing 5 overs 2 for 22)
Glasgow North U13s 120 for 8 (R McCallum 43 no, C McBride 6 overs 4 for 24)

In his email Iain, who has been in his west development role since 2007-08, said “…as of April 22nd I will be leaving my post with Cricket Scotland as West Development Manager to take on a new job. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me in my role over the past three and a bit years. It’s been a big patch to cover with a lot of responsibilities but I have enjoyed it in the main, occasionally got frustrated by it and always been grateful for the hard work of volunteers like yourselves.” The D&G group wishes Iain well for his future and is appreciative of his hard work for the region.

Cricket Scotland has taken the top global prize of the Pepsi ICC Development Programme Awards 2010, with what was judged to be the ‘Best Overall Cricket Development Programme’.

The award by the International Cricket Council follows the previous accolade given to Scottish cricket as the European regional winners, which was announced in January.

The winning citation said that Scotland’s cricket infrastructure achieved a significant amount in 2010 throughout all aspects of the game – in junior cricket, women’s cricket, in new strategies and the creation of new pathways.

Steve Paige (left), Head of Community Development for Cricket Scotland, said: “To win the European award was a tremendous endorsement of what we have been striving to achieve over the past few years. Now to be acclaimed as the best cricket development programme in the world is a fantastic feather in Scotland’s cap.

“As ever, this is not simply about the work of our excellent team of professional development officers. There is also an army of volunteers and coaches who play their important part in developing cricket at grassroots level.

Stay Focused - Bermuda - photographer Fiona Holmes

“In 2010, we saw some fantastic achievements within our community programmes: 468 schools competed in our schools cups; we had 56 primary schools festivals; we educated more than 300 teachers in introductory programmes; 110 umpires attended introductory courses, with 58 taking Level 1 exams; we delivered courses to 134 PE students; and now we have over 450 active UKCC coaches.

“And our development team around the country have been doing a splendid job in growing the game and ensuring we have sustainable structures in the clubs, so they can support all the children and adults that want to play the game.”

This year’s judging panel featured current ICC President Sharad Pawar, alongside former ICC presidents David Morgan, Ehsan Mani and Malcolm Gray. Keith Bradshaw, the Secretary and Chief Executive of the Marylebone Cricket Club, completed the line-up.

The ICC’s Acting Global Development Manager, Tim Anderson, said of this year’s eight award-winners: “It’s great to again see such outstanding initiatives and people leading the development of our great sport around the world. They deserve this recognition.

“Congratulations to all the award winners, and to those who were not successful this time around, your continued dedication to cricket’s growth is really making a positive difference.”

The national cricket bodies of all global winners receive a US$2,000 cricket equipment grant.
