2010 Easter Camp Fun and Games

The annual Cricket Scotland Easter camp was held this week at the David Keswick centre. Twelve boys attended; five from Dumfries, six from Galloway and one from Lockerbie.

Day one was all about the basic skills of batting, bowling, and fielding. The day began with fielding drills which included catching, running, throwing and general team work. They then went straight into batting where the main shot to be practiced was the front drive. After a short break the boys moved on to bowling where they concentrated on the run-up and where to pitch the ball. After that they split into two teams to play a game.

The second day started off with more fielding work. After that the rest of the day was all about having fun with games such as racing cricket, non-stop cricket, rapid fire and Top of the Class. The two days were enjoyed by all.

The sessions were led by Chris Stewart the D&G Community Cricket Coach, The post of local community coach is being part-financed by the Scottish Government and the European Community, Dumfries and Galloway Leader 2007-2013 programme.

More Cricket Coaches for the Region

The local support for cricket was enhanced over Easter with the delivery of an Introduction to Cricket course at the David Keswick Centre. The focussed course was aimed at taking cricket sessions indoors and in the small spaces which can apply in schools. The seven that benefitted included Active School Volunteers, PE teachers and youth players who assist in club sessions.

The course was initiated by Active Schools Co-ordinator Sue Brodie with the assistance of the Dumfries and Galloway Junior Cricket Development Group. She commented that “The course was a great introduction for people interested in delivering fun cricket practices and games to primary school children and it has given Active Schools the opportunity to organise a programme of cricket after school clubs that will develop into a league organised in partnership with the cricket clubs in Dumfries.”

The session was led by the West Community Development Manager, Iain Stewart, and Chris Stewart the Dumfries and Galloway Community Cricket Coach. The post of local community coach is being part-financed by the Scottish Government and the European Community, Dumfries and Galloway Leader 2007-2013 programme.

McBride heads for India

Tom McBride is packing his bags to experience cricket in India. Next week he leaves for the Pune Cricket Academy near Mumbai for an intensive twelve day National Academy tour of the sub-continent.

Last year the player, from Dumfries CC, played for Scotland U17s and Scotland U19s and the 18 year old has spent the winter as one of seven players invited onto Scotland’s Performance Course at Telford College in Edinburgh. He joins those in the National Academy Squad in making up a 15-man party.

The focus will be on training with three games scheduled later in the stay including a planned match against the state U19 side. Craig Wright, ex-Scotland captain, and now the National Performance Development Manager is one of the coaches travelling. Once in India the group will be under the direction of experienced local coaches well versed in the local conditions.

Wright commented that “the aim is for the batsmen to work on playing spin and for the bowlers to master very different conditions. The expertise at what is a global cricket academy, the facilities available and the experience will stretch their abilities.”

“Tommy has worked really hard on his game over the past months, both on the physical and the technical aspects. He is also benefitting from training with the others in the performance group some of whom gained their first caps for the full Scotland side last year.”

The former Lockerbie Academy pupil was first introduced to the sport thanks to a holiday cricket taster session organised by D&G Council’s Sports and Leisure Department and is a product of the hard work of the junior coaches in the region and has regularly played for the regional teams at varying age groups.

As one more experience the group will hopefully get to see the razzmatazz of a Twenty20 IPL game during their stay.
