Pavilion boost for Langholm

Langholm Cricket Club have, with support from Cricket Scotland, been succesful in a grant bid to the sportscotland-administered “Awards 4 All” Lottery fund. The grant is for sums up to £10,000, and Langholm are putting it towards a larger £30k project, which sees improvements to the club pavilion, including an extension, as well as other much-needed improvements to ensure the clubhouse is safe and fit for purpose for the years ahead.

Colin Turk of Langholm CC is pictured below at Eskdale Leisure Centre, shaking hands with Iain Stewart, the West Region Community Development Manager for Cricket Scotland, with four of the blossoming Langholm CC junior section who were also present.

Also present was Neil Cameron, who looks after the club’s TOPClub development, because the club plays in the Border League, and Dumfries & Galloway community cricket coach Chris Stewart, who has done a power of work in local schools – which has benefited the club’s thriving junior section and affiliated Indoor ‘Super League’. Mark Adams of Dumfries & Galloway Council Sports Development was also present when the good news of the grant bid was gratefully received by the local community.

Iain Stewart said: “It’s great to see Langholm sucessful in the grant bid. The Community Development team at Cricket Scotland are advising on grants more and more, as well as acting as referee for many applications as well. It is imperative, though, that a club brings the commitment and determniation to the application process that Langholm did, to ensure they are succesful. It is not the Development team’s role to do the form-filling, so clubs must be prepared to put the effort in to the application process. The rewards are well worth it if successful.”

First year for DG Community Cricket Coach

It is over a year since Chris Stewart from Langholm was appointed as the newly created Community Cricket Coach for Dumfries and Galloway and it has been a busy year in post as he has been moving around the region.

The remit is to provide cricket coaching to local children encouraging them to take part in this growing sport. As a result there is now more junior cricket played locally in schools and clubs and these schools have also been linked with their local club to ensure that there is support for the school and a healthy future for local cricket clubs.

The local cricket team, Mark Adams, Sports Development Officer (Stewartry), Chris Stewart, D&G Community Cricket Coach, Iain Stewart, Cricket Scotland West Community Development Manager

Thanks to the assistance of the local Active Schools programme, twenty five schools across the region ranging from Langholm to Dalbeattie have welcomed visits and blocks of cricket sessions. With the vast majority being primary schools the emphasis has been to provide an early introduction to the sport and nearly nine hundred youngsters have already benefitted directly from Chris’s expertise.

Ten holiday Cricket Camps, from Gatehouse to Annan, have been held to develop participation, and liason with club sessions have ensured that budding players can develop their skills with out of school cricket.

With an innovative mini-cricket programme introduced for those from the age of four and cricket a part of several school health days there is a productive programme to excite new players. An associated consequence has been that clubs are out and about supporting more cricket sessions at their local schools.

Iain Stewart, the Cricket Scotland West Community Development Manager said ”It’s been a great step forward to have a Community Coach exclusively for D&G. Chris has grown in confidence in the first year of the post and is becoming a more accomplished coach by the day. It takes a young person with energy and drive to fulfil a role as varied and demanding as this due to the geography of the region”.

The post of local community coach is part-financed by the Scottish Government and the European Community, Dumfries and Galloway Leader 2007-2013 programme and is also supported by Cricket Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Leisure and Sport department, and local cricket clubs.

With still more cricket planned over the winter and for the new school year local schools, teachers and parents are encouraged to contact Chris for assistance in introducing or improving cricket as a sport at their school either within the curriculum or after school. They can also contact him on how to develop their own abilities to take a cricket session. He can be emailed at Chris.Stewart@dumgal.gov.uk, or contact him at DG One.

More information about how to play junior cricket in Dumfries and Galloway can be found at www.dgcricket.org.uk.

DG U17s lose to Glasgow

The Dumfries and Galloway U17s team lost their West Cup semi-final against Glasgow last Thursday at Nunholm by 39 runs. The Glasgow side batted first and despite a tight opening spell by Steele and Edgar it took a run out by Douglas Brotherston from the boundary to claim the first wicket. That was followed by Edgar taking the first wicket off the bat caught in the covers to make it 29 for 2.

It was then spin in operation as Penrose and Bell and then Brotherston sought to make inroads, and leg-spinner Bell succeeded with two wickets bowled behind the batsman’s legs. However the Glasgow middle order were putting away the loose delivery and Mahmood and Ullah each with 31 kept the Glasgow total moving.

Brotherston came on to take an excellent caught and bowled and complemented that with a direct hit for a run out. Skipper Fraser Conn then took two wickets to help dismiss Glasgow for 168.

After the loss of two early wickets lbw to Parzada the local hopes rested on Richardson and Conn. Those hopes seemed justified as the pair put together a partnership of over sixty until a misunderstanding resulted in the crucial loss of Richardson run out for 32.

From a challenging position of 73 for 2 in the 22nd over the side lost another couple of wickets to the spin of Selby to change the complexion of the match at 98 for 5. Then ten runs later when Conn was out caught trying to force through the covers for a well compiled 41 Glasgow were definitely on top. Despite efforts by Carson to get the score within striking distance the D&G side finished all out forty runs short with seven overs still left.

Conn selected for Scotland

Galloway’s Fraser Conn has been selected for the Scotland U17s in their ECB Under 17 Championship match against Northumberland.

To mark the call-up he just missed out on a century, scoring 98, for Galloway at Meikleriggs on Saturday in Western Union Division 1.

Clyde beat DG U13s

Dumfries & Galloway under 13s came second to their Clyde counterparts on Sunday and ultimately by quite a margin. However there was not a huge difference between the cricket played by the teams.

The D&G opening bowlers were accurate and swung the ball. Colin Little in particular was miserly – conceding only 5 runs in his opening spell of 4 overs. The change bowlers also did their bit – keeping the talented Clyde batters in check. In reply to Clyde ’s 144 for 4, the home team’s batters also showed their abilities – Chris Lumb, Chris McBride and Todd Rafferty looking dangerous and keeping their side up with the required rate.

The main difference between the sides was the start they got to their innings. Flack, ably backed-up by Khan – the Clyde opening batters – were patient in the face of Colin Little and Todd Rafferty’s opening spells and were excellent in their shot selection throughout.

In the second innings Ahmad – bowling his team’s second over – was on a hat-trick with his third ball! Thereafter the D&G innings was characterised by a steady fall of wickets. The later batters did as much as they could with Danny Heron, last out, looking solid but the damage had already been done.

Match details:
Clyde 144 for 4 (N Flack 70, H Khan 23, R Armstrong 20; C Little 1/14 from 7, T Rafferty 2/25 from 7)
Dumfries & Galloway 93 all out (C McBride 20, C Lumb 15, D Heron 13; T Ahmad 2/17 from 4, O Shah 1/6 from 4, H Briggs 1/11 from 4)
